Best disk performance

When setting up a Proliant server with a single SA5i or SA6i disk controller and only two disks (configured in a RAID 1), what gives me the best disk read/write performance? Both the disks on the same SCSI channel or splitting them on the two channels?

I am not too sure if you would realize any significant performance gain by utilizing dual channels vs. a single channel, but you do get some redundancy if you use both. I would expect to see some slight gains as well, but since you're talking RAID1, writing will happen twice no matter what and the fact that it might be on seperate channels does not make too much of a difference, might even make it worse.

Reading on the other hand could have a significant increase if there are HEAVY reads since the SA can read from either disk.

You should split them on the two channels.

On UNIX we always split our disks on multiple volumes.
