There are a lot of books written about this and I can't repeat all aspects.
For more info, why not take a look:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_array_of_independent_disks

For HP-UX systems RAID 1 is often used (especially for boot disks) based on a volume manager like LVM.
Disk arrays often using levels based on RAID1 or 5. Since some time you can also use some smartarray cards (in some models even for internal disks) to implement RAID technology.

See also
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90950/index.html

Hi

In order to configure a RAID 5 a minimum 3 disks are needed. HP offers the h/w neccesary for RAID 5 or 6 implementation.
You need:
I - a RAID controler ie. HP SmartArrayCardControle 6402(two channels) or 6404(4 channels) series, SCSI ULTRA320
II - a MSA30 disk enclosure
III - and of course a minimum 3 disks to populate the enclosure.

The controler card comes with the utilities(sautil, saconfig) neccesary to configure the RAID then using the LVM create the new vgs and the rest.

Regards,
Florin
