topic Replacing Disk In Array in Disk Enclosures

Hi,

We have a disk in a Raid 5 array that is showing 'Predictive Failure' but it has not failed. It is still participating in the array and is not indicating a solid amber light. The ACU does not show it as having failed and displays the array as being normal. It has a flashing (not solid) amber light on the front of the drive.

I know it's OK to swap the drive online when we have solid amber and the disk has effectively been stopped, which is normally the case.

As the disk is still participating and is flashing amber, can I swap the disk online?

Can someone supply an authoritive explanation and point me to some reference.

Thanks
I found this on Tek-Tips which demonstrates that many many users are unsure as to whether this should be done with the server running, most agree cautiously to do this (ie swap drive with predictive failure) with server switched off.

http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1227156&page=1

I'm none the wiser as there are 2 sides to this story as in the link.

Has anyone any better information regarding this condition ? Someone from HP perhaps ?

Thanks
