saconfig - spare disk different controller

I am setting up RAID 1 on a MA30 storage array with a 6420 Smart Array controller.

I have the two controllers going to the MA30.

I have configured all my RAID 1 disks.
My question is:
I want to set up a spare disk.

Do I need a spare disk per controller?
Or will the spare disk fail over to what ever disk fails, does not matter what controller it is on...

I really need to use the one disk as a backup, but it doesn't need to be RAID'd. So I want to use the other disk as spare.

section Adding spare drives

Any drive that you want to use as a spare must meet the following criteria:

It must be an unassigned drive or a spare for another array

It must be of the same type as existing drives in the array

It must have a capacity no less than that of the smallest drive in the array

For the sa6402 you can add a single spare drive to several logical drives.
