I am setting up RAID 1 on a MA30 storage array with a 6420 Smart Array controller.

I have the two controllers going to the MA30.

I have configured all my RAID 1 disks.
My question is:
I want to set up a spare disk.

Do I need a spare disk per controller?
Or will the spare disk fail over to what ever disk fails, does not matter what controller it is on...

I really need to use the one disk as a backup, but it doesn't need to be RAID'd. So I want to use the other disk as spare.

---------- PHYSICAL DRIVES ----------

Location Ch ID Size Status

External 1 0 72.8 GB OK
External 1 1 72.8 GB OK
External 1 2 72.8 GB OK
External 1 3 72.8 GB OK
External 1 4 72.8 GB OK
External 1 5 72.8 GB OK
External 1 8 72.8 GB UNASSIGNED
External 2 0 72.8 GB OK
External 2 1 72.8 GB OK
External 2 2 72.8 GB OK
External 2 3 72.8 GB OK
External 2 4 72.8 GB OK
External 2 5 72.8 GB OK
External 2 8 72.8 GB UNASSIGNED
