Can additional disk be added to a Smart Array 642 controller to increase hard drive capacity without affecting the existing logical volumes?

Yes, you can add disks as long as the server or storage box has empty bays.
Then those disks can be used to create a new array, or be added to the existing array and used to increase the size of the logical drives on it.
This is called array expansion, and logical unit extension, look it up on ACU user guide.

hi,

yes you can, you can either replace physical disks one at a time with a larger disk (as long as the raid level redundancy is not compromised) or add new disks and expand the array using ACU. this will not affect current logical drives set up on the raid array.
