Hi experts,

Want a clarification for creating and assigning the path to luns. I create two luns on my VA7110 configured on a raid 10 array.
I have two FC cards.. and VA7110 is with dual controllers.

So is it possible to configure 1 lun's primary as controller 1 and the other lun's primary as controller 2... so that i'll have different performance paths for both LUNs. HP documentations says not recommended, but it doesn't say not supported.

Anyone has configured a similar thing before??

Waiting for your bullet fast replies!!!

Regards
Naveej

Hi,
Yes its is possible to configure in that manner for load sharing and redundancy.
I was using the same with N4000 and EMC array.

Regs,

Hi,
Is this array use FCAL ?
If yes then bye default Luns will have 2 paths internally in the array and one is primary and other is the secondary..
I m still trying to get the product specific answer.
regs,

You can do it but it does not make sense!

The VA7110 has one redundancy group (RG). This RG is controlled by one controller usually controller 1.
If your IO goes through controller 1 you use the most direct path: the performance path.
If your IO goes through ctrl 2 the IO has to be routed from ctrl2 to ctrl1 which then gets the data from the RG and passes it to ctrl 2.

So best is to have your preferred path for all LUNs to ctrl1 and use ctrl2 for redundancy.

This is totally different on the VA7410 where you have two RGs: RG1 and RG2. Each controller own one of the RGs and you can assign LUNs to RGs thus controllers.

Read more abut RGs starting on page 38 of the User and Service Guide
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?targetPage=http%3A%2F%2Fh200007.www2.hp.com%2Fbc%2Fdocs%2Fsupport%2FSupportManual%2Fc00088801%2Fc00088801.pdf

Cheers
Peter
