Hello,

I have one MSA30-MI that is connected to one rp3410 and one rp3440 servers.
I have 7 HDDs in MSA30-MI. rp3440 is connected to port A1 of MSA and the other server connects to port A2 of MSA .
Both the servers are up and running but just one of them can detect the HDDs of MSA30-MI.
ioscan on the second server just detects local HDDs and DVD.
1. I think both of the servers should detect the MSA's HDDs simultaneously? Is it correct?

As soon as shutting down the first server, second server will detect the HDDs.
2. Why doesn’t it find the MSA-MI when the first one is up?
3. What should I do to use the MSA30-MI simultaneously on both the servers? Is it possible to share this MSA between two nodes?

Alireza

The MSA30 MI is intended to be shared between two nodes.

The most important thing is to configure one of the servers to SCSI ID 6 instead of 7.

Did you do that?

I guess not.

Please note the hardware path to the disks.
Shutdown one of the servers.
Go to the service menu in BCH.

list the current scsi ids:

Service Menu: Enter command > scsi

Path (dec) Initiator ID SCSI Rate Auto Term
------------ -------------- ---------- ---------------
0/0/1/0 7 Fast Unknown
0/0/1/1 7 Ultra Unknown
0/0/2/0 7 Ultra Unknown
0/0/2/1 7 Ultra Unknown

Now set the right path to ID 6:

Service Menu: Enter command > scsi init 0/4/0/0 6

display again:

Service Menu: Enter command > scsi

The value is now 6. Reset the server and boot.

Your problems will go away!

Hi Alireza,

Well, I haven't used an MSA jbod yet but I've used quite a few of it's predecessor the DS series & on them you had to set a DIP switch to put them in "split-bus" mode so that two hosts had exclusive access to half of the unit's slots. I suspect that's what is in play here.
Check the manual for those settings.

HTH,
Jeff

@Jeff:

no switches here. The JBOD is always in split bus mode with the MI module installed and ready to use.

SCSI IDs are from 0 to 5 plus 8 on both busses A (right) and B (left)

"mptconfig" works only with certain SCSI controllers, I guess. The procedure from service menu works always for PA-RISC computers.

OK - thx for the info Torsten.
We used to use JBODs all the time on our 'Domes & systems with small (9 & 18) internal disks.
Now with the size of internals delivered I doubt we'll see them again. It's just internal & SAN anymore.

Cheers,
Jeff
