P822 and M6720 - controller not detecting existing array / logical drive

Environment:

DL360 Gen8, with P822 installed. One EMC SAE shelf, one HP M6720 shelf, both populated with 24 drives. Each had one array / logical drive defined on it. After trying to configure both for MPIO, upon reboot neither array /. LD was detected.

I recreated the array / LD set on the EMC as that one was esentially empty and the data which was there was easy to replace. The larger M6720 array / LD, however, will take months to replace one unit at a time from source (there is no backup). No changes have been made to the drives / array (ie no new array creation, etc. ) The controller simply will not detect the existing logical drive on the disks.

I also note that the dignostic report seems confused about which drives are in which enclosure. It's a mess. Any ideas? Diagnostic report attached below

Hello @dww0311,

When you enabled or changed things related to MPIO / multipath, the controller probably:

• Re-enumerated the disks
• Changed enclosure IDs or path order
• Or switched from “single path” view to “dual path” view

Because of that, the P822 now thinks the disks belong to a different enclosure or are new, even though the data is still physically on them.

That explains why:
• The logical drive is not detected
• The diagnostic report is confused about which drives are in which shelf

This is very common with external SAS shelves + multipath changes.

Safe things to try first

Check in SSA (Smart Storage Administrator)

Look for:
• “Unassigned Drives”
• “Foreign Configuration”
• “Logical drive is offline”

Look for a “Recover Logical Drive” option

Sometimes shown as “Re-enable”, “Import configuration”, or “Reactivate”

If offered, this is usually safe

Verify cabling

Ensure both SAS cables from the M6720 are connected to the same controller

No cable swaps compared to before

Temporarily disconnect the EMC shelf

Boot with only the M6720 connected

This reduces enclosure confusion

If firmware is old, the controller may not re-recognize the array.

Check and update in this oder:

• P822 controller firmware
• Server system ROM
• M6720 expander firmware

Firmware updates are usually safe, but do not update if the tool says it will reset or clear array configuration.

If the issue persists:

At that point, the best next step is:

• HP SSA CLI (ssacli)
• Look for a foreign or offline configuration
• Manually force a re-scan or import

If even that fails, HP support or a data recovery service that understands Smart Array metadata may still recover it — because the array was never overwritten. Focus on re-importing or re-detecting the logical drive
