topic StorageWorks 3000 array in Disk Enclosures

Hi,

I have a StorageWorks 3000 Array attached to a Sun E450 Server, the array currently has 6 x 18GB disks in it configured at RAID5.

I need to add some additional capacity by adding drives.

The 18GB drives are end of life but i can get hold of 36GB drives instead - Can anyone qualify that there will be no technical issues running this 36GB disk along
side the original 18GB disks in a single RAID5 set? Will I get the capacity of only 18GB out of it or the full 36GB?

Points waiting!

Thanks in advance.

James

IF you are talking about the new EVA3000, then yes, you can do that.

We don't suggest putting different sized drives in the same disk pool, though. It's not a technical problem, though - it's related to how the array allocates data blocks from the disk pool and load-levels the drives.

Mixing drive sizes in a disk pool may make your performance uneven.

...and yes, you will get the full capacity of the drive added to the disk pool - it'll use the whole drive.

You might want to try partsurfer to find 18GB "replacement" drives. http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main

Good luck,

Vince
