Hello,

My company has a Proliant ML-350 G3 with a Raid0 array which was mistakenly setup by my predicessor. It should have been Raid5. We now have a failing drive and need to replace it.

Can I migrate the array from Raid0 to Raid5 then replace the failed drive and rebuild the array with the new drive in place? Can I do this from within Windows 2000 server using ACU-XE?

TIA

If you have a failed drive and a raid 0 set, how could you get to your data?!
Either you don't have a failed drive or you don't have a raid 5 set.

Leon

Thanks for the reply.

The drive hasn't failed yet but we are getting warnings of immement failure. ACU reports a raid0 array.

Kevin,

It depends. Do you have ACU - Array Configuration Utility? Depending on the version, etc. you might be able to take advantage of the Online RAID Level Migration, which allows you to change the raid level of your array. Check this link for more information:

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/software-management/acumatrix/advantage.html

Good luck - Brian

you can do the migration. After this is done, run the M&P patch, you can find it here:
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/10468.html
Your harddrive error message might be erroneous. If after this the drive still reports predictive errors, replace it

Excuse my confusion, but is it Raid 0 or Raid 0+1?

Raid 0 is mirrored, Raid 1 is striped, Raid 0+1 is mirrored and striped. Neither is Raid 5.

If the 'failing' drive still works:

If it is Raid 0 the disk is running off the mirror.

If it is Raid 1 the Raid array is running off the failed set (spare) drives.

If it is Raid 0+1 physically look for red/or yellow LED's on the drives and go from there.

In either case the disk should be restored to full functional behaior before any migrationto Raid 5 as a precaution.

Or did I read a different tech manual?
