topic DVD630e in Optical Jukeboxes and Drives

I just purchased the DVD630E (external DVD Writer). I was disappointed to learn that the only way I can update the DVD is to install the recording software (RecordNow) that comes with the DVD.

I had a prior version of RecordNow. In addition to not working well, it created conflicts with my packet writing software and with Nero, which I much prefer.

Is this the norm for HP's firmware upgrades? I own several other DVD writers (Sony and Panasonic) and a CD (LiteOn) and none of them require non-related software to be installed in order to upgrade the firmware. I find it odd and aggravating enough that I may return the drive.

Is there any way around? With they eventually use another means for firmware upgrade?
