What software are you using to format the blank discs? Are you able to burn any type of disc audio/data? Just because the operating system sees the device as working properly, does not mean that it is. The operating system sees the device as a cdrom and is not able to determine whether or not the burn laser on the unit has gone bad or not. The 7200 is an older model & I am asuming that you purchased this second hand.

Have tried every update and patch known to man.

Thanks
Ben

Thanks for your reply Richard. I bought the unit new a couple of years ago and have burned about 100 disks - using the HP/Adaptec software that came with the burner. I've still not got it going and am ready to purchase a new one (I don't think HP this time) - figure it must be burned out - the closest I've came to getting it working is when I used a CD Disk cleaner (little brushes on a CD that spins and supposedly cleans the laser lens) It did almost work after running the cleaner a couple of times (no media error) but disk would ultimately freeze up and ruin cd. Thanks again,

Benny

Thanks for the inquiry Roger - I'm using Windows 98 SE on a homemade ASUS KT7 with AMD 900 Socket A.

Thanks
Benny

Benny:

Have you confirmed you have the firmware version 3.01 installed? See: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/software/7200-301.exe.html
AND
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40494.html

HP does NOT recommend it but some people have solved 'burner' problems using canned air and the brush-type cleaner you referred to. Since you've had it a few years and it's probably out of warranty (have you checked?) and you're thinking of replacing it anyway, I would suggest you blow it out as best you can (a few daring souls have removed the outer covers to really get all the dust out) and then clean it repeatedly with the brush cleaner and retry. Unfortunately, these and other devices have dusty air pulled through them and often the dust stays inside, particularly if the normal path for air to pass through the system is obstructed. Think about it BUT read this first: http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hpcd-write9681&LC=information_storage&Tfile=lpg40259

Read about "Creating an Optimal CD Recording Environment": http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40322.html

There are lots more things to try to resolve this problem but it's 3 AM and I've given you enough things to do. Make sure DMA is on for the hard disk drive BTW. Good luck!
