I have just installed a CD Writer 8203.
I am unable to record music onto a blank
disc. Every time, it goes up to a certain
point (about 30%), then I get a Write
Error (error #10). I have spoken to Tech
Support twice, but they have been unable
to solve it, so far. I have disabled several
programs that were running, so that my
system is up to 84% (available resources).
I have a Pentium 166 MMX with 32 MB RAM.
Any help would be appreciated - I am at a
loss to solve this.

Hello:

Is it really an 8203? I can't find that. Could it be a 8230e? If yes, try the following web page for starters. Please confirm the drive model and let us know what OS you're using on your computer. Thanks!

My CD Writer is a 8230e model.
I have spoken to Tech Support
three times, for several hours,
and we have been unable to
resolve the problem. I have gone
through all the troubleshooting
procedures, including downloading
the new HY MyCD software. I have
freed up available system
resources to 95%. Still, the same
problem (write error - error #10).
Thanks for any help.

Wendy:

Sorry, I forgot to include the link in my last message. Here it is:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/prodhome/hpcdwriter22108.html

You still haven't mentioned what Operating System you're using. If you select 'update software and drivers' from the above link, you'll find newer USB drivers for some OSes. If you're still having problems/want help, leave another message and I'll try to help you.

Dear Wendy:

I also bought a cd-writer 8230e and had the exact same trouble you described. I was able to get my cd-writer to work. However, before I explain how I did it, you need to know my computer is using an AMD-k6 processor with 32 mb ram. Also, my operating system is Windows 98. I am not a geek, so don't take this as gospel--just give it a try and see if it works for you.

First, I uninstalled all of the HP software that came with the cd-writer. After everything is off, you'll need to reboot your system. Make sure every open program is closed. Use control/alt/del to be certain only the Windows explorer remains open. Be sure to disable any screen savers. Once you know everything is closed, reinstall the hp cd-writer software called "MyCD". Don't install the other software piece that comes with it. You'll have to uncheck the box on the installation menu to skip it. Once the program has been re-installed, you'll be directed to reboot the system again.

Once you're back up, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel and find your Power Management icon. Make sure your system stand by setting is on "never". Also, select "never" for turn off monitor and hard disks. Click on the "apply" button once all settings are "never" and close out this window. Now click on the System icon and select the Performance tab. Choose the Advance system selection called File System and set your read-ahead optimization setting to "none" by sliding the pointer to the left. Click on "apply" and "ok" when you are done, and re-boot your system.

When the system comes up this time, make sure all programs that reside in memory are closed. Especially, close down your Norton Anti-Virus or similar program if you have it. Use control/alt/del to be certain you have closed everything possible. Once you are certain there is nothing left you can close try using the cd-writer to copy a disk. My program worked at this point.

I think the problem is the program needs more memory than 32 mb. That's probably why you have to go through all of these steps--you're freeing up enough memory to get the thing to work.

I hope this solution does the trick for you. I know how frustrating it is to be a non-geek and have to figure out a programming problem by yourself. Good luck to you!

PS you can find the solution I sent you using the ask jeeves feature. Type in "what is error 10?"
