Have recorded one CD, happened to be on the HP CD-R cd included with purchase. Every other attempt with a different manufacturer's CD-R faults to an error message claiming the cd is dirty or scratched or to try yet another manufacturer's CD-R. No other applications are running I've shut down everything else to run clean still no go. I have not deleted and reinstalled. Seems unacceptable to have to do this. I thought HP was on it's way up, seems it's the same product base new wrapping. Anyone got ideas on this ???

I've run through 3 HP cd-writers within the last couple of years, and, although I've had a lot of other problems, I've never had that error message. I've never bought HP media, and I use the squirliest stuff you can find because it's cheap. Right now I use a generic brand packaged by COMP-USA, and the times I've coastered my cd's have been due to computer/software problems rather than bad media. My current model is the 8200i, so it's probably a bit less reliable than your's.

(1) What other kind of media are you using?
(2) Are you leaving the cd's out to gather dust & the like?
(3) Have you tried using canned air on them? (careful because that stuff can squirt propellant if sprayed too long and hard, but if you wipe the cd too firmly with a cloth, you can create scratches)
(4) You had a successful run with the 1st HP cd, but not with other media afterwards. Does it still work with HP cd's? If not, you may have a physical problem with your drive that just cropped up (like maybe a dirt clod found it's way inside the little cd door :-o )
(5) Not to make you sound like a dummy, but some offbrand media don't sport labels on the top side. Are you putting them in right side up? My COMP-USA cd's look almost identical on both sides before being written to, and there have been times when I've had to take a second look to figure out which side was which.
(6) Does your computer meet the recommended resource requirements found on the box your writer came in? I wouldn't think you'd get that particular message with such a problem, but computers do funny things sometimes.

I called tech support and fixed it in 3 minutes flat, whats happening is a buffer overun. You will delete the Adaptec software and be sure to ctrl-alt-del to close individual programs running in the background.
