8200e CD Writer, Buffer Underrun, need help!

Hey there,

I'm running Windows XP on a pretty sweet system, having just upgraded from 98SE, and I use Nero mainly to burn with. The 8200e burner worked well before with Nero etc, no problems at all.

But when I upgraded, Nero couldn't even detect the writer anymore! What an ass! Anyhow, tracked down the solution to this prob in your forums (the wnaspi32.dll prob), and fixed it. I was stoked!

But when it came to burn, it all turned to custard. The buffer would just keep decreasing steadily, until nothing was left and it caused the burn to stop. This all happened in the first 30-60 seconds.

Been trying to fix it, but with no luck!

Any help needed please!

Check with the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) to see if your system is busy doing other things.

I have found that, for example, the File Indexing feature of XP can really drag down system performance. Disabling this feature makes my systems run considerably faster.

Second, make sure that you have adequate memory on your PC. XP runs best with at least 256MB RAM, and better with 384MB or more.

Third, defrag your hard drive(s) so that your disk accesses (source of the data for the CD burner) is not spread all over the place. Assuming that you installed XP over your old 98SE system, then your files and free space on disk are really fragmented.

To clarify, my sys. specs are:

1200mhz Athlon, 256mb RAM, 20gig HD.

I've only just upgraded, as in a week ago, so the whole harddrive is as clean as it can possibly be. I have enough grunt to run it.

That general help page is no help whatsoever when you're having problems past the "is the device receiving power" stage.

Please, someone must have had this problem!

Like I said, it's really odd, as for ISO1 mode in Nero the "User Read Buffer" starts at 100% and slowly decreases, and the "Recorder Buffer Level/State" Starts off at 60% and falls at a percent every half second, consistantly.

In Audio burning mode, it is totally differnt. The "Percentage Complete" immediatly jumps to 30% done, The "Recorder Buffer Level/State" stays grayed out (no green or red light), and the "User Read Buffer" Starts at 100% and slowly decreases. However, 15-20 seconds into the supposed "burn" (ruined a few cd's now dammit), the burn stops with the error message "HP CD Writer+ 8290 Invalid Field in Command".

I don't want to have to buy another burner =o(

I've tryed all those drivers mate, and unless there's a list of previous drivers for the 8220e, I've exhausted all driver possibilities.

Hello,
look at this excellent one http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40110.html . I think you can use PAT (Perfomance Asessment Tool, available from HP's web site in 'drivers' section) to check drive's perfomance (at leat read perfomance)

Eugeny: great find, I just addad 6 pages to my drive manual. It doesn't adress skegs's XP though.

It does suggest early on, to defrag before burning, maybe it's just that simple. got me stumped.

Personally I think you're better off with 98Se, I kept mine running fine so far.......(fingers crossed)

But it gives an idea why buffer underrun happens. I think that there's insuffitient data feeding for CD-burning. Why? I do not know, but all these points should be checked up to hardware issue. BTW, is there anything on the same bus with CD-writer getting active during CD-burning? Concurrent bus access can decrease perfomance

Back from holiday, so happy new year yo all of you helpers!

Ed Hart: I've definitly got the latest drivers. Also, I've just downloaded the latest VIA Tech drivers for my motherboard, so we'll see if that makes a difference after this post (will reply if it does). I've only just installed XP Pro, so I didn't think that defragging would be nessacary, but have now done that also. I've got Norton AntiVirus 2003 Prof., and have tryed burning with the autoprotect disabled, but with no joy. I know XP has its own firewall, but how could that effect burning (I always burn disconnected from the net, being 56k)?

Eugeny Brychkov: I'm going through all that I can from that link you provided, but no joy so far. How can I find out if there is anything on the same bus as the CD writer?

I have included as an attachment a jpeg of what Nero Info Tool is showing me when I check the Configuration, and find an Unknown Adapter.

Also, just looking at my system info, it tells me that my Total Physical Memory is 256mb, yet my Available Physical Memory is only at 54.57 mb. Is this normal??? Could this lack of free RAM be enough to cause the buffer underrun? What the hell is draining it?

Also, in this post I've included a strange thing I've found in Device Manager. As the 8220e is an external USB device, there may be a conflict here. It is showing two sets of everything.

wrote here but nada

Nero is NOT working with
HP8200 usb.

Not with the "new" HP drivers
And not after reading lots and lots of stuff FROM HP SITES

NERO+HP=0

if you got 1, not 0
you are just lucky
