Hi,

If the disk is part of a volume group and you wish to remove the whole volume group, a simple 'vgexport /dev/myvolgrp' will be sufficient. If you choose to re-use the disk for another volume group, then you must use 'pvcreate -f' before you attempt to use the disk.
You can run a 'dd', but it not necessary.

Another method is by using this example 'vgreduce /dev/myvolgrp /dev/dsk/cxtydz to remove the disk from the volume group, if that is the only disk you wish to remove.

HTH
Michael

hiya,

I'd like some advise on totally deleting data on disks. I believe lvremove and vgremove or vgexport will only scramble the disk headers. I have confidential information I need deleting.

I have been advised to used mediainit on each disk and over write with a dd five times.

Any other ideas?

Hi,

Sun has written a blueprint on datascrubbing in which they suggest overwriting the disk twice using the format command. The equivalent in HP is mediainit, so perhaps using it twice would be sufficient.

Here is a link to Sun's blueprint: http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0600/scrub.pdf

Keith
