The drive error log shows that it had repeated calibration errors, all within the one power-on hour (that filled the log).

When the drive cannot calibrate the tape, it cannot read the media ID, so I can't tell if this all happened on the same tape.

Is this a DLT IV tape that was written in a non-DLT1/VS80 drive? If so, it cannot be used without degaussing.

Have you tried multiple tapes? Have you cleaned the drive?

I would recommend running the LTT drive assessment test.

Was the assessment test run on a new (or different) tape? You may have had some debris on the head that cleared itself up.

Regarding degaussing tapes, look at this web page:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=lpg50141&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Christian,

Thanks for clarifying. As I said, it's possible that there may have some debris on the head (or tape) that cleared itself up.
