We also receive this error randomly. It does not always occur on the second tape, sometimes it is the first tape. We also use DP 5.5 with a MSL6030 LTO library. How do we increase the timeout value, where is this value stored and what is the name of the specific value?
For example we used the file:
\Program Files\OmniBack\Config\server\Options\Global
to set the value:
SmWaitForDevice=720
To wait for a busy tape drive for up to 8 hours instead of the default 60 minutes.

This sounds like the most likely option I could find:
# SmSendReceiveTimeout=timeout in seconds

# default: 1800
# This timeout is used when sending data from Agent to Session Manager
# (BSM, RSM, etc.) or receiving data by Agent from Session Manager. If
# operation can not be completed within timeout value, error is issued
# and connection closed.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi,

When a backup has filled up a tape and unloaded it, when it tries to load a second tape to the same drive it fails with the following error -

Cannot open device(Unit not ready.)

We are using Data Protector 5.5 with Ultrium 2 drives.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Check whether you are using a medium that is incompatible with the
Media Recognition System. Media used with DDS drives must comply
with the Media Recognition System.

James.

May be you have to increase the time out, allowing the tape to be loaded and recognized before to try writing on it. Some autoloaders need time to became ready

Hi

Have these errors on DP 5.1,5,5 & 6.0 as well. Sometimes its related to Media issue. The backup continues with a different media on the same drive once it reports an error on one of the medias.

Rgds
Prakash
