The 2u supports 2 DAT drives side by side.
The 3u can support 4 DAT drives, 2 DLT drives, or a combination of 2 DAT drives and one DLT. These drives are getting harder to find. For your needs I highly recommend the External Ultrium 215 or 230 tape drives. They both will store up to 200 GB compressed on 1 tape and will out perform any of the DAT and DLT drives. Download the Performance assessment Tool to see what your system is capable of handling.
i was assigned to purchase a backup system for our office... i am generally new to this and i hope you'll be able to help me with this...

i was browsing through the HP tape and tape drives and i got really interested with the hp SoteageWorks DLT 40/80 GB 3U rackmount, two drives... does the 3U means that you can mount upto 3 tape drives? i think i would like just the one drive... but is it better to have the 2 drives?

and i am also confused about the difference between the SureStore and the StorageWorks... are these part of the Brand Names or the software that comes with the drives?

we are using WinNT 4.0 for our server (which is a Micron), and i would like to install the drive in this server... i prefer the external drive... i will just be backing up the files that are stored in the server... i also read something about the One-Button Disaster Recovery... is this the one that when you try to recover, it recovers even the computer system and the applications? so that i don't need to install the applications i already installed?

one more thing, can i just use the backup software used for WinNT 4.0 Server? please help me... i would really appreciate any help... thanks a bunch...

Ayen-
I can't answer all your questions. However, the 3U refers to the height of the unit.

The unit fits in a 19" rack and is 3 rack units high. One rack unit = 1.75 inches so this unit is 5.25 inches high.

1U = 1.75 inches
3U = 5.25 inches
You might also check out AIT technology (invented by Sony), if you can. Media is way less expensive, and there are unique advantages, like built-in chip that stores cartridge ID, built-in head cleaner, etc.

For basic info on technology, check out http://www.aittape.com
http://www.cybernetics.com/tape_backup/tapebackup.html

For HP models, check out http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/ait100/index.html

I hope, this helps.

Regards,
