DDS Tape Size Problems

I'm fairly new to the backup process, and am having trouble using the entire space available to me on the tape.

I'm using an HP C5683a tape drive with a 24GB tape. Problem is i only seem to be able to get 10GB on the tape before it flashes up FULL in ntbackup.

Do i need to run a diagnostic check on the drive?
Is the tape knackered? (i have no clue as to its age)

ntbackup says it's a 24gb 4mm dds tape, is this the correct one?

you should be using DDS 4 tapes. This is a generic OEM DAT 40 tape drive and although DDS3 will work ok you will cause unecessary wear on the tape drive. But to only get 10 GB stored points to already compressed data or data that does not compress well ssuch as JPEGS, WAV's etc
