As posted in Patrick's thread, the IBM 7206 Model 220 DDS-4 tape drive is for RS/6000 systems running AIX, thus no additional driver necessary.

You need to talk to IBM, but I have no expectation of them helping you in this particular instance since you are trying to use specific hardware for other than its specific purpose.

Unless anyone is willing to prove these are not Type 7206 DAT drives.

Thanks,
Scott
HP Support
Vince,
I've tried that already and the driver doesn't work. However I'm sceptical about the correctness of switch settings on the device itself. I think it was used with a unix server previously and I can't seem to get the thing to work. Oddly, onthe unit it has a sticker that says "Switches disabled" which is slightly odd.

Jules.

Drivers tend to be specific to recognised drive ID's. That's why, for example, different generations of DDS-2 drives all report themselves as C1553A, so they all work with the same driver. Look at the HBA boot up banner and note what the drive ID's as. You might find a suitable NT driver on the IBM web site. You can't easily change the firmware to HP code.

It isn't possible to just flash new firmware into the drive. To change the personality of the drive, the internal firmware/hardware codes need to be changed and this can't be done with normal firmware. It first needs to be flashed down to factory code called "mtc". However I recall that the IBM version drives have slightly different hardware too (3 LEDs not 2). It's probably easier to frig the ID strings in the driver!

You need the factory only code, and unfortunately, it isn't available outside of the factory. This is partly because you need a special piece of code to flash this code into the drive. If editing the driver inf file doesn't work, then the only solution would be to get a IBM supplied driver, sorry...

I did make it work with Windows 2000 by adding the line: 'HPDAT_TAPE = "IBM ", "C5683-03030"' to the HPDAT.INF file, however I didn't work out the correct format to make the INF file work with NT, but I didn't try very hard as we upgraded the bow to 2K a few weeks later. But since I now know the format of the drive identity for the INF file you should be able to make it work with NT. Try it and see.
