Hello,

I am using the native Unix command Tar to the no rewind device rmt1.1. I have not found any other command switches to specify a non auto rewind device.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Hello,

I am trying to setup a MSL 6030 on an IBM AIX 4.3.3 system via an IBM HBA 6228. I am able to see and write to the MSL from the IBM AIX system but am unable to stack backs. It appears the MSL is auto rewinding the tape between backups. I have tried using the UNIX native tar command to backup to /dev/rmt0.1 & /dev/rmt0.5 non-auto rewind devices with no success.

We are using a backup software called Storix which by default writes to the /dev/rmtX.1 tape device.

Any direction or advice is greatly appreciated.

not sure if this can help, but there is a setting in the library that will prevent tapes to be ejected automatcaly after a backup, this parametre is " implicit" or "explicit".
"explicit" wait for a specific "unload" command, but do not know ih the rewind take place anyway

Hello,

I just tried changing the "implicit" parameter to "explicit" with no success. I changed the parameter and ran a couple quick tar commands, listed them from the tape and only the second listing appeared. It appears the tape rewound in between the tar commands.

Thank you for suggestion.

you probably need to ask this to the unix support forum, I do not deal with unix system, but I know you can create special file for rewinding or not rewinding tapes. May be this is the trick

marino

Hi there.
check the backup software, whether there is a parameter to append backups to the tape ( until it is full ) or use a different tape after each backup.
Rgds
Alexander M. Ermes

Hi there.
The native tar usually does a rewind, because it does not set a end-of-job marker on the tape. Any additional backups can destroy the data on the tape.
Rgds
Alexander M. Ermes
