Dear ladies and gentleman,

i have a problem with an ups connected to an server running hpux 11.00.

The problem is that even in SAM the device is shown and the daemon is started, I do not get messages from the ups.

I have changed the device from /dev/tty0p1 to /dev/tty0p2 and /dev/tty0p3 but i do not get any response.

The ups works fine, it means that if i disconnect it from the power it changes to battery and back, but the problem is that the server is not shut down.

Has anyone an idea, what it can be or how i can diagnost this problems.

At the very least you need this entry in /etc/inittab to have that functionality work.

ups0::respawn:rtprio 0 /usr/lbin/ups_mond -f /etc/ups_conf

Obviously you need to set parameters in the /etc/ups_conf file as well.

Ignore me, you already did that.

Next step is to make sure that device is set up properly.

Check it in sam.

also ps -ef | grep ups
See whats running.

I am screwing up this moring.

Here is my output on the ps command.

root 8 0 0 May 21 ? 0:00 supsched
root 3432 1 0 May 21 ? 0:00 /usr/lbin/ups_mond -f /etc/ups_c
onf -e ups_monchild

Here is my configuration file:

shutdown_delay_mins:5
shutdown_timeout_mins:10
upstty:/dev/tty0p1:SOLA

The last thought is, check the cable.

dmesg for hardware issues.

Now I'll shut up.

i have look for running processes and this is the output i receive:

I will verify the /ect/ups_conf to see if there is any mistake.

Hi Luis,

It could be a cabling problem.

Here's a useful document that discusses how to use the cu command to talk to the UPS. It's worth going through these steps to prove that the serial connection between UPS and server is good.
The document ID is KBRC00008525 and you should be able to locate it in the Technical Knowledge Database - as long as your ITRC details are linked to your contract.

Please let me add another question to this thread.

I am considering buying a Clary UPS. The product description says that a "SNMP/HTTP card functions as an SNMP agent and includes an embedded HTTP server. This means that one industry standard management tool can be used to monitor and control all your UPS...."

In questioning the supplier, I have been told "There is a unix based Java agent that runs under the control of your OS to manage the UPS/Server interface, and it is delivered with the SNMP software. Current unix systems supported are Linux, Novell, SCO, Solaris, and Windows, so you might have to modify the source code to get it to work on hp-ux or one of the generic offerings may work."

It sounds like the UPS is connected much like a network printer but I am concerned that I might have to modify the source code to get the monitoring and control application to work. I am running hp-ux 11i on a C3600 workstation. Currently, I have a UPS without automatic shutdown on a 715 workstation. Am I likely to have much of a problem with the software?

Hi Luis, Shiju,

I'm afraid that forum rules prevent me from posting the document. I have checked with my local ITRC guru who was able to retrieve the document.
He reminded me that if you do not have a support contract/system handle correctly linked to your ITRC id you will not be able to get full access to the technical knowledge database.

The ITRC is a freely available resource with access to these great peer-to-peer forums, but there are areas which are only available to people that have support contracts with HP, hence we are not allowed to publish documents from these areas in the free areas.

I recommend you check with your HP contract administrator to ensure that you are linking the correct details to your id. Alternatively you could log a call with your local response centre and ask for the document.

I'm sorry I can't help, I hope I've helped you understand why this is.
