No, that won't hurt anything. Just make sure that you shut the machine down gracefully.

Hello,

I am a freelance graphic designer knowing a little about IT but i'm not a real IT professional, running an old rack server at home office as file server, dlna and help computing 3D imaging.

(proliant DL380p gen8 equiped with mechanical HDD - 0 and 1 are server class for OS in raid1 and other ones are classical home class 4TB HDD for storage of data )

I'm used to let it powered on 24/7 but, with raising electricity costs here, i'm thinking to turn it off at night and power it on back on the morning. I looked over various forums about this idea and can't get a clear view about it. Is it a bad idea ? would it damage or get this server used quicker ? (low and high temp on components Vs constant one...) how about HDD ? i read they might last less time but i don't see why they would last less than in a desktop computer turned off every night...

The server must have proper cooling so that the components do not get heated up. If concern is regarding power consumption then you can check in BIOS for Power Management→HP Power Regulator and select the desired setting for power consumption. So depending on the usage you will have to configure the server.
