should i use wins server ?

Hi Dear Experts.

I have win2k3, win xp, win2k, and win 98 machines.
I m using dns for name resolution.
The Dns server is configure to allow dynamic updates.
the dhcp server is used to assign IP add/Subnet Mask, and DNs servers IP.

should i use wins server ?
or what benefits i can have if i use Wins server also.

WINS provides a distributed database for registering and querying dynamic computer name-to-IP address mapping in a routed network environment. When u r using dynamic updates with dns , i think there is no much use in configuring a WINS server which is normally used for NetBIOS name resolutions.

I installed Wins because my 98 clients could not find a domain server to valid loggons.
By setting up WINS the clients first job was to goto the WINS server to get all its info ie: dynamic ip address or scripts.
If you are getting any of these errors you could use WINS

Hi Maaz,

WINS and NetBIOS have been replaced by TCP/IP and DNS. For your newer machines, there is no benefit to having WINS in addition to DNS.

I have not had win9x clients on my network for several years, so I can't speak to the issue Derek mentioned.

Even with windows 2000/XP/2003 you may still need WINS in some environments,
for example see
"Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange 2000 Server require NetBIOS name resolution for full functionality"

"Microsoft recommends that Exchange organizations use Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) and DNS for name resolution. Installations of Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2000 in large and subnetted organizations without WINS have not been fully tested. In large organizations, NetBIOS name resolution through broadcasts may not function correctly. Some Exchange functionality may also be affected."
