>they said password protect so that no one can use the wireless signal

They are using the wrong terminology, encryption is the right one. I would think a password on your modem prevents changes from being made.

Do you know how to access your modem from your PC?
For my Linksys router I have to use this in my browser: http://192.168.1.1/
And for my DSL modem: http://192.168.0.1/
But consult your documents. What type of Netgear modem do you have?

Under wireless, you have several choices:
WPA and WEP (not as strong encryption)
You need to set up a key or passphrase and make sure all of your wireless devices know what you are changing it to.
