Win2K domain discovery problem.

Folks,

I have recently set up a Win2K server as a domain controller and added my WinXP machine as a user on the domain without a problem.

The problem arises when I try to add my partners Win2K Prof to the same domain.

Her 2k prof machine talks to the D.C. without any problems but her machine wont see any shared drives on my XP box and vice versa.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi,
can you please check if the security is disabled on the winxp.
go to network properties and click advanced.
disable the security if it's enabled.

I'm not exactly sure where I supposed to be looking here. Do you mean the Internet Connection Firewall??

If so, it is not enabled.

Well, if you have ICF turned OFF on both workstations, then then next questions are do you have the DNS service running on your server? Is DHCP setup on your server, or are you using static IP addresses on your workstations?

Win2K/XP/2K3 normally use DNS for name resolution, so if you don't have DNS running, you need to. Also, I'd make sure that you have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on the workstations in the TCP/IP advanced properties.

I think you have to check on the DNS on client pc.

Is your Server a WINS server? If you have both systems setup using the IP address of the WINS server, then you should be able to browse the network shares, otherwise, you will have to use an LMHOSTS file on both systems. %Windir%\system32\drivers\etc The file will be named lmhosts.sam Create the entry on each system for the other system, then save the file as lmhosts without an extension.

Also make sure that file sharing has been enabled on both.
