HP NAS planning

Hi all,

There is a question about HP NAS line (NAS 8000 / NAS VA / NAS XP ). Is there any information about HP's plans for these products ? Are they going to be kept or will be discontinued ? If discontinued, what will come instead (Windows-based NAS OS, HP-UX-based NAS OS or other)? What is current best choice for departament/enterprise level NAS solution from HP ?

I would recommend you to call local HP office (or office in Moscow +7-095-797-3520) and ask them for help to decide what's the best choice.
This question you ask is difficult because the best solution for you depends on which tasks will be running, how many users will be working, what OS do you like (for example :-) ), etc.

Oleg,

The roadmap for these products points to the NAS8000 as the basis for the product line (which is Linux-based on a DL580G2 Proliant) in the future, but for the next year (or 2, or 3) there will also be the e7000, which is (essentially) the same hardware, but running a Windoze-based kernel.

The e7000 tends to be more compatible with Windoze clients, and the NAS8000 tends to be more compatible with UNIX-based clients.

Lifecycles of these products are hard to predict. The e7000 has been a successful product, so it may hang around longer than expected. It depends on the development of the NAS8000 O/S - when we get the NAS8000 as compatible with Windoze as the e7000, I expect the e7000 to be retired as a product. Note: this may *never* occur, as Microsoft is fond of changing their protocols with every release of a "new" O/S.

The NAS VA and NAS XP are custom solutions, and will remain as such. There isn't much call for a Superdome NAS head! If you need that much horsepower, we can provide it; but we realize that not many companies out there need (or want) that kind of horsepower in a NAS solution.

What I am still unsure is what kind of OS HP offers with NAS 8000 currently - Windows or Linux-based ? In different sources I see different versions. Do anybody knows for sure?
Is it possible to find more details about OS for NAS 8000, some documentation - release notes for example?

The NAS8000 is indeed Linux-based.
