I haven't had any problems using the same HBA for backups and access to the va. The problems I've seen is windows 2003 and insight manager messing with the tape drives. After I disabled the tape and changer drivers in windows and turned off the insight services. Things worked fine.

Insight was changing the scsi timeouts on the tape drives and causing DataProtector's I/Os to timeout (long seek requests).

I've also seen some third party monitoring tools mess up the backups. I had one that would wake up every once and a while and decide to so a status check or some such operation on the tape drive. The operation would cause the DataProctor I/O to abort.

in my enviroment I have a Win2003 Cluster connected to a VA7410 by two QLA2340 (FC2414) trough 2 2/16 HP Switches. Now I'm using Secure Path 4.0c and SCSI Port Driver 9.0.0.13.
I need to have a backup trough SAN fibre using one of this HBA, I know this isn't best pratice to do it!! In fact I have some problem during long time backup because after some time there is a bus reset and a failover occurs, so backup fails (usually after 2,30 Hrs). My backup device is a Surestore 2/20 and Data Protector 5.1. I plan to change HBA drivers to STORPORT 9.0.2.11, could be a resolutive thing? and somebody could post me a possible solution?
