Anybody know how to use this? I've used it before but forget how to get in there. I navigated from sam before.

To start the CommandView launcher:

# /opt/sanmgr/commandview/client/sbin/launcher &

Make sure your DISPLAY variable is set prior to running the above command.

Thanks, I got a letter saying to upgrade my SDM to 01.09.01, is this advisable? Is this something a novice can do? I'm a pretty good hacker, I just don't want to wipe out my array setup on my va7100

Ok, that looks pretty easy, is that all there is? I mean that link you sent. Looks too easy. Also, this doesn't really do anything to the array right? It's just software to monitor correct? So there is not big deal with doing this while the Oracle database is running?

the commandview sdm software (for VA7xxx) is a tool to monitor and configure the array. BTW, what version you are using?
It does not do anything against your array until you give the wrong commands.
The first reason for new versions is to support new firmware features in va firmware.
The VA firmware have alsways a minimum requirement for commandview software.

Not sure about the current version, I think it's 1.09.00 ?

So if I follow your instructions on the link I should be good? This can be done independent of anything running on the server and wont interrupt users?

I looked over the instructions and I'm a bit confused as they seem specific to the user who posted the thread. Could you post the instructions in here? I'm not sure if I need what that other guy is talking about with the armdsp stuff.

Have a look into the userguide, chapter 2 page 25 and following. Everything is there, step by step.

Find your version by typing

swlist | grep -i cmdviewsdm

If you are on version 1.09 IMHO there is not need to go to 1.09.01 unless your VA has firmware HP22/A140 and you need to use the new firmware features described in the release notes.

Do you have a VA7100?

AFAIR the first version that supports the VA7400 was 1.01 in summer 2001.

if you do a

armdsp -a

there will be an entry "Product Revision" just beneath the ARRAY INFORMATION. What's the value (HPxx)?

Instead of the '-i' use '-a'

# armdsp -a VA7100

And you shold get a whole LOT of stuff.

You might want to redirect to a file and then go back and look at the output file with other commands.

# armdsp -a VA7100 > /var/tmp/VA7100.out

# more /var/tmp/VA7100.out

The alias of your array seems to be "cardinal", NOT VA7100.

Please replace in all commands posted by Patrick "VA7100" with "cardinal".

Please post the result of the
"armdsp -a cardinal" command.

Your array have firmware version HP01.

This was the first version. Quit old and there are many many improvements made until today.

As well you have a warning. This should be an alert to you!

I'm not sure if you have only one controller installed or 2 installed controllers and one is failed.

Normally, the firmware is aware of the number of installed controllers. I'm not sure about HP01 firmware! Have a look at the back side of your array. Are two components installed? Two FC cables attached?

If there is only 1 controller installed, ignore the warning. But I would consider to upgrade the firmware. Since only HP can do this for you, please contact HP.
