I have a legacy VA7410 system running an old version of Commandview SDM (1.05 I believe). Recently I had a disk failure which I diagnosed using armdsp -a. As it is no longer supported, I purchased a replacement disk from a vendor and had it installed at the VA at our co-located facility. In the past, it's been my experience that after replacing a failed disk and letting it initialize, I need to perform a partial reset to have the system acknowledge it and rebalance.

However, when I tried to do an armdsp -a I got:

[#]armdsp -a wtfca01 | more

Error: Cannot open target. Please retry after discovery process.

armdsp -i works just fine.

I went on to armdiscover:

[#]armdiscover
This could take several minutes ...

Remote discovery failed with status: Error connecting to HostDiscovery.

diald appears to be running:
[#]ps -ef | grep diald
root 24319 1 0 Jan 25 ? 190:08 ./diald
root 29351 8986 1 10:45:37 pts/0 0:00 grep diald

From reading the forums, the indication is that the next thing to do is an HA_Dial_Stop and a HA_Dial_Start. Now, the VA7410 is in use and all the files appear to be just fine. Furthermore, this system is due to be retired in about 20 days. If it were to crash, it would be a heck of a lot of trouble I wouldn't need.

Is there any chance that the HA_Dial_Stop and the HA_Dial_start will affect the connection between system and VA7410? Or does it only affect Commandview?

It is responible for the communication between the array and commandview only.

Safely done, thanks.

Of course now on an armdiscover I get:

[#]armdiscover
This could take several minutes ...

Failed to obtain remote database interface to host: localhost

If you replaced the bad with fresh disk, you have nothing to do after this.
The array will format the new disk and begin to use it.

Are the LEDs green?
Just try to start the process HA_Dial again.

I agree, for a time period of now 19 days it is not worth to invest a lot of time ...

Another workaround:

connect a laptop pc to the serial port of the controller (speed 9600) and run an emulation like hyperterminal or putty (serial). You can see the status. Is it READY?
type
> dsp -?
to get more information.
