The Command View software needs to have direct access to the SAN. Placing this software in a VM environment will stop this requirement.

Therefore, no, you cannot place the CV software on a VM client.

Regards
Anthony

Is it possible to run command view 7 / webes etc on a windows 2003 server which is a client on a vmware host? The release notes do not mention this as an option.

Hi Anthony,

CV 7 will communicate using the FC conectivity. Which can be done using the VM also. So why cannot we go ahead with this. It may not be a recomended option but communication is possible i guess.

Tell me if i am missing anything.

Prashant S.

Hi,

I had a quick play around with this recently and couldn't get it to work... although I didn't try too hard.

From what I remember, the VM guest could indeed see the HSV controllers, however the Command View installation wouldn't start.

If I get chance I'll try again, although I doubt this would be a supported solution even if it could be made to work.

Cheers,

Rob

> CV 7 will communicate using the FC conectivity.

Right, but a VM talks through an emulated BusLogic or LSI Logic parallel SCSI adapter. It cannot query the Fibre Channel switch's name server, because it does not have access to the physical FC adapter.

This should change with N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV), but you need to give the developers some more time.
