use hyperterm on one of the HSG Console ports and run vtdpy and do a show disks or sho devices (i think). Look for a disk or disks with a high error count, If you have one then replace it and see if the errors go away. If you dont see all the disks move the cable to the other controller and repeat.

I am currently running a HSG80 base SAN. On one of our Windows 2000 servers I am consitently getting the same 2 error messages in the event log.

In the Application Log I get:

Event ID 1 Source: HS_Service
HSZDisk error detected.

0000: fd ff ff ff a4 00 00 00 ýÿÿÿ¤...
0008: 44 01 00 00 02 00 01 00 D.......
0010: 03 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 ........
0018: 87 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 .......
0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0028: 05 00 00 00 41 00 18 00 ....A...
0030: 32 30 30 37 30 39 32 35 20070925
0038: 31 30 32 39 34 33 2c 35 102943,5
0040: 31 2d 30 37 30 30 00 00 1-0700..
0048: 81 00 29 00 57 69 6e 64 .).Wind
0050: 6f 77 73 20 4e 54 20 35 ows NT 5
0058: 2e 30 20 62 75 69 6c 64 .0 build
0060: 20 32 31 39 35 20 53 65 2195 Se
0068: 72 76 69 63 65 20 50 61 rvice Pa
0070: 63 6b 20 34 00 00 00 00 ck 4....
0078: 21 01 07 00 44 49 4c 4d !...DILM
0080: 4f 4d 00 00 21 04 10 00 OM..!...
0088: e1 1f 00 60 36 00 30 00 á..`6.0.
0090: 30 00 30 00 31 00 46 00 0.0.1.F.
0098: 41 04 05 00 45 00 31 00 A...E.1.
00a0: 00 00 00 00 f0 00 01 06 ....ð...
00a8: b9 3b 61 98 00 00 00 00 ¹;a ....
00b0: 18 00 00 80 00 25 00 00 ... .%..
00b8: 01 00 18 00 00 00 02 03 ........
00c0: 00 00 00 00 0a 45 28 03 .....E(.
00c8: 51 21 00 28 80 28 80 06 Q!.( ( .
00d0: b9 3b 61 00 00 08 00 1a ¹;a.....
00d8: 00 00 20 20 20 20 20 20 ..
00e0: 5a 47 31 31 39 30 35 38 ZG119058
00e8: 37 37 56 38 37 46 07 00 77V87F..
00f0: 00 00 00 48 50 42 32 42 ...HPB2B
00f8: 44 31 34 36 38 38 35 36 D1468856
0100: 42 20 20 20 20 20 20 00 B .
0108: 00 00 00 00 f0 00 01 02 ....ð...
0110: 3d be 61 28 00 00 00 00 =¾a(....
0118: 18 00 00 80 00 25 00 00 ... .%..
0120: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0128: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0130: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0138: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0140: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

In the system log I get:

Event ID 33 Source: Disk
Data was recovered using error correction code on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR4

0000: 00220003 00720001 00000000 80040021
0010: 00000102 00000000 00000000 00000000
0020: 140dd200 0000000d 00000001 00000000
0030: 00000004 00000028 00008402 00011800
0040: 8a068028 0000e906 0080

I am unable to see any kind of error on the SAN itself.
Can you tell me what is causing the problem?
Thanks

Hi Terry,

This looks likely to be a recovered soft error on one of the disks in the HSG80.

If these are happening very frequently it's probably an indication of a disk that's about to fail.

If you hook a console up to the HSG80's serial port, you will probably see error messages showing up there. These will indicate which disk is at fault.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Rob

Rob,
Thanks for the info, however we had already done that, and everything was clean. However, we just logged into the HSG80 again, and there are still no error msgs of any kind. So, we're still scratchin' our heads.

We have already done that. We did a sho disk on each disk in the array and saw zero errors on all of them. So far there have been no dicernable problems, just the continuing string of error msgs. I defragged the disk a few days ago, and since then the errors have been fewer, but they still show up, especially at night when the backup is running. Thanks
