Hello Guru's

I would like to create a LUN that is less than 1GB in size. It appearst he Command View 8.0 GUI will not allow this. Has anyone run into this situation? Thanks in advance

Hardware: EVA4400 and Command View 8.0

Gerald

You can't do it.

What's your reason for wanting a smaller lun?

You can present the 1GB carve it up into smaller chunks at the OS level if needed.

DBA requested a series of very small LUNS for an Oracle RAC implementation. This will be "raw" storage for oracle.

However, Perhaps there is a way to divide this space up that I don't know about. Redhat 4 is the OS the LUNS are presented too.

Maybe you could create new, smaller devices with the help of LVM (Logical Volume Manager).

Command View EVA and its parent, the HSV Element Manager, have never allowed virtual disks smaller than 1 GigaByte.

We had to do this before for the DBA's.

We had to create 8 small disk areas for them for various logs.

Had to create the 1GB LUN and then use LVM (on HPUX) to carve it up.

What's the IO per sec requirement? Do you have enough disks in your group to meet it? I don't have the formula to calculate IO per second...I got support to do that.

In the meantime we just created the LUN in the group with the largest amount of disks to get as many spindles as possible.

Eventually moving the LUN to our XP12000 where more spindles were available.

Redhat has LVM so you should be good to go.

Hi,
you can create small partition (slice) by some volume manager. What operatin system do you have?
P.

In the scheme of things 1GB is pretty small these days.

In RAC you do use some small disks for the OCR and voting disks - with mirrors etc you might have 4 of these - so thats maybe 4GB of storage in total. Yes its a watse, but not much of one... don't sweat it...

HTH

Duncan

> Yes its a waste, but not much of one...

Agreed. On TruCluster systems, I've had a 1GB Vdisk just for a 2048 byte partition on a cluster disk. It's a little annoying, but in the grand scheme of things, 1GB isn't that much space.

Cheers,

Rob
