topic Bridging a knowledge gap in HPE EVA Storage

Hello, I'm a novice here in the storage world. The bulk of my knowledge about storage is what one might find in the SCSI chapter of an A+ certification study guide. I've tried picking up a couple of books on SANs and also downloaded the user manual for an EVA 5000 (what we use here at work), but I'm afraid some of the terms and concepts are still unfamiliar to me. Can anyone recommend a book, magazine, blog, something that might help raise my storage knowledge to the point where I could read through the HP manuals for the different storage solutions we have in the datacenter where I work and get the most out of them?

One other question: Does the "HSV" in "HSV110" stand for anything? I can't find it as a term in any of the glossaries through which I've read.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

With regards to good reading material, I'm not much help. I've found that the best way to teach yourself these things, is to get some hands on experience with how they work... Difficult in a production environment I know, but it's usually the best way.

If you're struggling with specific terms etc. let us know.

With regard to HSV, there are a couple of old posts that will help you out.

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=769218

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=418267

HSV = Hierarchical Storage Virtualization

The naming convention was started by Digital Equipment Corporation way back in the mid 80s, when they brought out the HSC - Hierarchical Storage Controller - it's evolved since then...

Cheers,

Rob

Also take a look at the SAN Design Guide. Go to http://hp.com/go/sanDesignGuide and click on the "SAN Design Guide" link. At the very least, take a look at the Part 1, Architecture PDF.
