Changing SAN

I wonder if some-one can help me answer this very simple question that I have been lumbered with and no documentation to help me.

We currently have a SAN using SecurePath 3.1 on Windows2000 servers.
I have had a request from management that they would like to move onto a completely new SAN with better hardware.

Can anyone help me with regard to what issues or reconfiguration of the SecurePath software or Windows server will be needed to do this. If we configure the new SAN with the same names and passwords in Securepath as the current one will we have to re-install the software???

You are not mentioning what kind of san you use. Also, what kind of san, switched fabric or arbitrated loop?

You really need to give us a bit more information here.

What is your current SAN composed of?
What are you trying to add?
What is your desired end state?

Are you just adding more SAN equipment to your current SAN configuration? If you did a SAN correctly the first time, you should be able to do this. There is no reason to just scrap the old config and make a totally new SAN.

Do you even have a SAN switch? By my personal definition, a SAN requires at least one SAN switch. Directly attached Fibre Channel storage is not a SAN by this definition.

Who makes your SAN switches? If Brocade,(B Class) contact your local Brocade rep. They have always been helpful when I needed more information about any of their products.

Others have asked for more info. We definately need it to better answer the question.
Another question, why replace the storage? why not just add to it?
If this is a SAN, then you should have a Fabric switch of some kind.
You could purchase an additional Storage Array (e.g. EMA3000 from HP) and add that.

There would eb no additional changes or configuration to SPM. Although if you're planning on going to W2003 at any point, you'll need to purchase and upgrade to SPM 4.0B

Generally, you won't have to do anything on your Servers except probably a reboot to have your HBA "settle" down with the new "SAN". However, ask your SAN Master/Guru if there will be changes to parameters/settings on your HBA to adjust with whatever switch(es) it will now communicate with on your New SAN... SecurePath-wise, nothing changes..
