How to update firmware of a msa san 2/8

Hi, today I successfuly completed my first cluster, with many thanks of the forum help from Uwe en Andrzej.

I'm having a small problem:

How do update the sanwitch of an MSA1000

Do I need a software piece to be installed?
What do I need to connect to the sanswitch to setup zonning? I can't neather do that.

As I see I can only download v3.2.0a.dat firmware file file?

Do I need to use the Ethernet Serial Cable that is included?

Please help ,

Are you meaning the MSA2/8 switch ?

If so you can use the webtools, point your browser at the switch and go from there. (You need JRE 1.2-008 or later installed on your PC).

Or you can telnet to the switch and use 'firmwaredownload' via and FTP or RSH.

The default IP address, if I recall correctly, is 10.77.77.77. As that does not fit most environments and each switch needs its own uniqe IP address (don't be upset/ laugh - not everybody knows this!!), you first need to connect to the switch using the (grey) serial cable that came with the switch (the black cable is for the MSA controller).

The default speed is 9600, Username: "admin", Password: "password".

The command "ipaddrset" will enter a dialogue where you can change these values. Just hit RETURN/ENTER when you are asked to assign an address/mask for the fibre channel interface.

It looks like V3.2.0a is the latest firmware. You can find installation instruction if you follow the link via the text "Firmware for HP StorageWorks B-Series Fibre Channel Switches". One more click on the right link any you end up here:

I think you go one step to fast.

so I telnet to the swithes?
I have 2 of them, so I need to change 1 IP adres... (I will do Uwe, I believe you!)

The server where I launch telnet from has the ftp service running.

How can I get the firmware file updated? With commando's do I need to launch?
Is it some where documented?

Your refence document also advices to save the config file to your ftp server?
How is that exactly working?

Yes, you can web manage them to a degree, but you can also launch the CLI> from within the web tools too. I feel much more at home with the Brocade FabricOS, I prefer the control you have from the prompt.

I have a manual for setting up the 2/8 switch, but can't find a PDF for it on the web. The best I can come up with for you is a Google cache HTML version;

Detailed instructions for the firmare update are on the first link I gave you - here is an extract:

The firmware files begin to download. This takes
approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

8. Upon completion of a successful download, you will see the following prompt:

Download Complete

Note: Type fastboot for the new firmware to take effect, as follows.

Switch:admin>fastboot

It is a good idea to save the switch's configuration before doing a firmware update. While I have never experienced a problem, I have seen reports here that something can go wrong.

But don't worry, it is as easy as:

File Name [config.txt]: switch1.txt
Protocol (RSHD or FTP) [rshd]: ftp

Upload Complete
...

"switch1.txt" is a text document, but it uses LF characters for line separation. If you are on a Windows system you call properly view it with WORDPAD.

I'm connected to the san swith.
Changed the passwords.
Change the ipadres so it is in our range.

I connect serial to de san swith.
On the same server FTP is running read/write.

Configupload
IP:192.168.254.196 (ftp server)
user:administrator
file:config.txt
password:mydomainpasswd

error:connection failed on both swithes.

My swithes have the ip adres 192.168.254.161 en 192.168.254.162 in the same subnet mask.

What could be wrong?

Here is a log from a SANswitch 2/16 with 3.1.1 firmware:

The main difference I see is that I get asked for the upload protocol. The server is a Windows 2000 box and the file has arrived fine (viewable with Wordpad, because lines are only separated by LF).

One thought:
make sure that you do not set an address on the FC interface - at least not in the same subnet of the ethernet interface:

fcswa2:admin> ipaddrshow
Ethernet IP Address: 172.16.1.4
Ethernet Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Fibre Channel IP Address: none <<*****
Fibre Channel Subnet Mask: none <<*****
Gateway Address: 172.16.255.254

One of my colleagues has wasted some time to try a firmware update on a customer's switch. He (customer) had set the same address on both interfaces in good faith.

Yes, I believe you can manage zoning through the web management tool as well. (You can even get to Telnet prompt through it too.)

However I don't have zoning configured on mine.

Yes, zoning can be done through the web interface and the command line interface (serial port / telnet).

But: it requires careful planing - else, you can end up with a total mess.

Best is if you first collect some information:
- storage systems and their WWPNs
- servers, operating systems and the adapter WWNs
- which elements need to talk to each other

Then it can be decided how the zoning should look like.
