I'm trying to update from NT4 to 2000 Server, and I believe that the BIOS is to old. (Update from BIOS version 4.06.23 to 4.06.38.)

First of all, I've have problems during POST (theese problems have not caused trouble as fare as I know):

0081-51 NetServer Management Controller SelfTest Failure
0090-64 DIMM Management Failure (sometimes)

But when I boot with the BIOS diskette (created from LC3BIOS_US.EXE), I get "Error. sdredit.exe failed."

After reading messages/articles, I tried to boot from a DOS diskette and then switched to the BIOS diskette, and ran the command:
A:> FLASHMMC LC3RA_US.BIN

In the beginning it's allright, but after a while I can see a warning,
"...cannot perform save/restore for MMC data because device is stuck in boot mode", after that I get
"Error: firmware update failure 0x3FE" and then the update is terminated.

I also have tried to unplugg the server for 2 minutes.

When I boot with a SF3 FLASH diskette (created from SF3FLASH.EXE), it says "Firmware update utility A.10.11" and that the download may take 5-10 min, but then "Failure IMPI Code 0xC1".

----------------------------------------------------------
HP NetServer LC3

CPU - PII 400 MHz

Phoenix BIOS 4.06.23 PQ
Adaptec SCSI BIOS v1.34S1

NetServer Management Controll Firmware version A.01.09
NetServer Management Controll Status C684
----------------------------------------------------------

Best regards
Jonas (...very much a beginner)

Jonas,

A BIOS update from .23 to .38 is quite a big step.
If you have the possibility to update to an older version first, (from an old navigator CD?between .23 and .38) you might be lucky.

Otherwise, it looks like you have a hardware problem, the IO riser board would be most suspected (this is the board with the PCI slots and SCSI connectors).

Marco.

Hi Marco.

Thanks a lot. You were right about the hardware trouble. I spoke to HP Support in Stockholm yesterday, and today there were a guy from HP and switched the backplane card, so now the server i running like never before.

Have a placent weekend.
Bye. /Jonas
