Well, I was assigned the duty of fixing a compter in the lab, and figured out the answer, which I haven't seen posted anywhere.

Turns out there's this tiny lil option in the device manager.

Right click on "My Computer", then go to properties. Click on the "Device manager" tab, then View Devices by Type. Click on the "Computer" icon at the very top of the tree, then go to its properties. There'll be a "Reserve Resources" tab at the top. Click on the I/O radio button, and remove the "01f0-01f7" entry, and you're done.

Hope this comes in time to still be useful.

I have an old Netserver E 40 that I have loaded Windows 98 on. I can not see the CD Rom drive even though the hardware picks it up when it boots. I also am showing an error with the Intel 82371SB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. I tried removing the standard IDE Controller driver and this one and reloading drivers, but it continually loads both, with the Intel losing out in a resource conflict. I feel sure this is the problem with the CD. Anybody got any ideas?

The hard disk is on the primary IDE connector. The CD is on the secondary IDE connector. The machine boots okay. I'm seeing the Intel 81371SB PCI BusMaster IDE Controller in device manager with a yellow bang beside of it. I'm seeing the Standard IDE/ESDI controller okay. The bang is on the Intel controller because of a conflict on I/O Range 01F0-01F7, I/O Range 03F6-03F6, IRQ 14, I/O Range 0170-0177, I/O Range 0376-0376, IRQ 15. The conflicting device list shoes it is used by the Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller. I tried removing both devices. I've tried updating the driver, windows says that if finds an updated driver and loads it, but it is the same driver. An associate I work with loaded this machine with the CD. I tried using just the primary controller for both the HD and the CD, but the computer would not post without reporting an IDE error.

How about using an IDE cable that has 2 connecters on it and setting the HDD to master and the CD-ROM to slave. Another thing to try is to open up resources that you don't use, like the printer port or serial ports.

I had tried to use a single cable, but took for granted tha the master/slave settings would work as is. Today, I took both devices out and set up the drive as Master and the CD as slave and wa-la, I can see the CD drive. I still haven't cleared the error in device manager on the Intel controller though. If I wanted to add more IDE devices at this point, I would have a problem. The secondary bus does work though, because I used it set up for the CD when I re-did the windows 98 installation yesterday, but after loading windows, no CD again. So today I put the CD on the same cable as the HD just to get the machine running. The resource conflict between the standard controller (read, primary I suppose) and the Intel (secondary?) is still there

The only thing I can see that would help you is to open up an IRQ to allow the IDE controller to work. 98 isn't supported on this server, so I don't know a whole lot on how to fix it.

Well, I've slept since then,..

I have the HD and the CD working, but I believe that I had to put them both on the primary controller as master and slave. Without going back and opening the box, I'm not sure now.

I did go and look under device manager, and the Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller is the one being used, the Intel 82371SB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller still has a yellow bang beside of it. So, I'd say I don't have access to the secondary interfaces.

Hi Darrell, I duplicated your process and put the HD and the CD both on the primary controller as master and slave it now sees the CD Rom. I also looked under device manager, and the Intel 82371SB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller still has a yellow bang beside of it. I was hoping to install a second HD for mirroring but maybe that isn't possible. Thank You for your reply and if I get it figured out I will let you know. Take Care, Lou

William, Just take the cable that has the hard drive (it's flat & wide) and attach the extra empty end to the CD-rom. You won't need the original cable that the CD was attached to anymore. Then you must change the CD-rom from a master to a slave by re-aranging the jumper on the back. It should have a little map on the CD as to which two pins the black jumper should be on. Then you're set! Boot up and it should see the cd.
