Our LH Win2K server with a 3-disk raid 5 (with Adaptec AIC 7880) recently had a problem with one of the disks. HP Server E-Support recommended that we run the NetRAID Assistant to check. We downloaded, installed and run this software (E-Support mentioned that we can run it w/o rebooting as long as we don't run Disk Administrator or Disk Manager until we have rebooted).

We found that one of the disks failed. We tried the rebuild option and succeeded. At this point, we rebooted the server. During shutdown, there were messages on the server that some of the files cannot be found or currupted, and the shutdown process would not proceed and I have to manually reset the server. Upon boot up we get the message "Operating system not found".

I can boot to BIOS (F2) and see that in the hard drive priority, Bootable cards is already selected as no. 1. Also, when I go to NetRAID Express Tools (Ctrl-M), >Configure>View/Add/Delete, I can see the 3 drives as already part of the array.

I am not sure where we went wrong in the procedures to fix the problem and what we can do to correct our present situation. I appreciate any info you can give to help me.

Hi Benny.

First of all, I would not have my C: drive in a RAID5 config. Instead of that, I would have it in a sepparate set of 2 disks, RAID1, and then the other ("data") drives in RAID5.

I would try to run a consistency check on the RAID5 from Express Tools and, if it does not have any effect, your options get reduced to these two (I would ask for some more help before proceeding with the second one):

1.- Boot from the Win2k installation CD-ROM and then select an option called "Repair a previous installation" or something like that.

2.- If option 1 does not work, your only option is to re-install Win2k and then restore all the data from your latest backup :..(

Once this is finished, I would also have the failed disk replaced as well.

Best regards.

I would not recommend a consistancy check at this time. I would remove the failed HDD from the system and boot it with the known 2 good drives. see if this helps things.

If it boots, then i would replace the failed HDD through HP support. If it doesn't....... tell me if anything new happens. :)
