Re: processors on LP2000r

I had this problem last year and was sent this solution from HP support. Hope this helps
HP Netservers - Mixed CPU Steppings Update
Issue
In regards to mixing CPUs (central processing units) in the HP Netserver,
there are some issues that have created questions for the support community:
1. What is HP's statement on mixed stepping for CPUs on all current HP
Netservers?
2. If CPU mixed stepping is okay, what are the requirements for CPU slot
assignments?
3. What are the implications of the error message in the system's event log
when using mixed stepping?
"The CPU's in this multiprocessor system are not all the same revision
level. To use all processors the operating system restricts itself to the
features of the least capable processor in the system. Should problems occur
with this system, contact the CPU manufacturer to see if this mix of
processors is supported."
4. How can the customer view the CPU's stepping?
Solution
1. For support of dual CPUs with the same speed and cache size but with
mixed stepping, HP conforms to Intel's "Mixed Steppings in DP Systems" which
is detailed in the following document: "Intel Pentium III Xeon Processor
Specification Update" on Intel's website.
<>
Select Support, Processors, Pentium III Xeon Processors (or whatever
processor is applicable), Specification Updates, Pentium III Xeon Processor
Specification Update and download from one of the following:
?? U.S. FTP Server (Download within North America)
?? Mirror FTP Sites (Download from international areas)
?? U.S. Web Server (Available for byte serving)
Intel provides a Dual Processor matrix for Pentium III Xeon processors and
it shows exactly which processors can be mixed and are supported. HP
supports all mixing of steppings mentioned in the Intel document. In mixed
stepping configurations, all processors must run at identical frequency,
have the same L2 cache size, and the base die is the same.
Exception:
Mixing CPUs with different steppings is not supported in HP Netservers that
act as Computing Elements in an Assured Availability (AA) solution because
of the risk of divergence. As Computing Elements, CPUs must be exactly the
same.
2. For CPU slotting assignment with multiple processors, HP conforms to
Intel's specifications where the processor with the lowest stepping must be
the Bootstrap Processor (BSP) as determined by the CPUID instruction. CPU
slotting assignment makes no difference in a current HP Netserver since the
system BIOS automatically determines the boot order by arbitrating each
CPU's stepping and selects the CPU with the lowest stepping as the Bootstrap
Processor. The system BIOS places the remaining CPUs in the order of their
stepping, with the next lowest being placed ahead of a CPU with a higher
stepping, and so on.
3. This is a Microsoft message in MS Windows 2000 that indicates that the
CPUs in the server have mixed steppings or revisions. Since HP supports
processors with mixed steppings, this message in the system event log can be
ignored.
4. CPU stepping can be viewed from some HP Netservers that have front panel
control (FPC) capabilities and from the hardware inventory listing when
using the HP DiagTools. HP DiagTools comes with the HP Navigator CD-ROM.
Details
Affected systems
hp netserver e60
hp netserver e800
hp netserver lc 2000/lc 2000r
hp netserver lc3
hp netserver lh 3/lh 3r
hp netserver lh 3000/lh 3000r
hp netserver lh 4/lh 4r
hp netserver lh 6000/lh 6000r
hp netserver lp 1000r
hp netserver lp 2000r
hp netserver lpr
hp netserver lt 6000r
hp netserver lxr 8000
hp netserver lxr 8500

Cheers
Malvin
