Netserver LH6000 CPU compatibility

I have a LH6000 server running at 700mhz CPU.
I changed the CPU to 550mhz. Now my server hang.

According to the HP engineer, 700mhz CPU is running on different system board than 550mhz CPU. Is it true? Does I need to change the system board in order to run the server on 550mhz CPU?

Hi,

It may be true you need a different system board, as when you upgrade on this server to a 700Mhz Processor, the kit includes a new system board.

However, have you checked the dip settings on your current system board to see if they are set for the slower processor? I would try this before buying a new system board.

Settings:
The configuration switch, S1, is located on the lower left of the system board of the system board assembly. To change the switch settings, it is recommended that the system board assembly be removed from the chassis.
550Mhz Switch 1: ON Switch 2: OFF Switch 3: OFF Switch 4: OFF Leave the other swicthes alone.

Also, there was a questions of VRMs. THe 700 XEON had a internal CACHE VRM and did not require an external VRM to support the CACHE memory. On the LH4 you removed the VRMs for the cache when upgrading and left the VRMs for the core.
From Terry at HP "Because processors faster than 550 MHz include voltage regulation for the
cache, remove the two cache VRMs (VRM 1/2 and VRM 3/4) on the system board
when using processors faster than 550 MHz."

Be careful about the dipper switch settings on the motherboard. Especially if you downgrade your CPU, the motherboard will massively overclock if you don't reset the dipper switches.

For instance, I have a Netserver 700Mhz Xeon, which was running at 550 when I got it because the motherboard dipper switches were set incorrectly. You will see on the motherboard that there is a guide for setting the switches depending on what CPU's you are running.

If you are running a 550 Mhz processor on a motherboard set for 700 Mhz, this will massively overclock your CPU, and probably burn it out eventually.
