topic LC2000 graphics options in Netservers

I have an LC2000 Netserver that I am looking to add a PCI graphics card to, but am having trouble finding one or information from HP about which cards are compatable with the onboard controller. So far I have not found a jumper or Bios setting to disable the onboard RageII card. In the manual it states that there are optional supported graphics card, but doesn't state which ones. My main reason for this upgrade is to get a higher resolution on my desktop and/or to get some graphics programs to run. Basically I use it as a workstation. It is a dual 933Mhz box. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Derek

Hi,

true color is limited to 800x600. If you want a higher resolution, you are limited to 64k colors. I haven't seen a switch and the compatibility list does not mention graphic cards. So I assume, it will detect a new one and automatically disable the onboard one.
http://h200003.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=lpn13793&locale=en_US&taskId=101&prodSeriesId=50440&prodTypeId=15351

hope, that helps,

Michael
I thought it would disable it too, but instead I get beeping and no video from the new card or the onboard when a PCI graphics card is inserted.

Derek

Derek,
I would believe it is an interrupt IRQ problem between the board and the Netserver. You could try other more flexible video cards, but here is all I could find:

The IRQ settings are automatically assigned and donâ t require user intervention.
PCI boards have the capability of sharing hardware interrupts (IRQs) with other
PCI boards, as stated in the PCI specifications, but this does not always prove to
be true between board manufacturers. To solve this problem requires an in-depth
knowledge of a serverâ s implementation to place a PCI board in a slot that would
not conflict with another PCI boardâ s IRQ setting.
The HP NetServer provides various ways to automatically share interrupts in the
NetServer. The sharing mode can be selected under the heading "Sharing
Algorithms" in the Setup Utility. The IRQs are automatically assigned during boot
up for each PCI slot and embedded device in the NetServer, avoiding any IRQ
conflicts and providing the best performance. This feature also provides a way of
manually assigning IRQs when disabling the Sharing Algorithm feature. Refer to
Chapter 10, "Configuring the HP NetServer," for more information.

PCI Device Settings â Use this menu to disable the Sharing Algorithm
for each slot and manually set the IRQ for each PCI board installed into
the six slots. This menu also includes setting the IRQ Locking feature
for the embedded SCSI channels and the embedded LAN connection.
Three more IRQs can be made available by disabling the Parallel,
Serial A, and Manag

SOme more info comes from the other Netservers indicating that it may be a problem with the PCI slot you have the card in.
LH6000 - PCI video cards are not supported in PCI slots 1, 2 and 3 Issue The Intel i960 chip set does not support video behind the bridge. Because slot 1 through slot 3 are behind the i960, these slots cannot support video cards.
LT6000 - PCI video cards are not supported in PCI slots 1 and 2 Issue The Intel i960 chip set does not support video behind ...
HP Netserver LXr8000 - PCI Video Cards must be Installed in PCI Slot 1 HP Netserver LXr8000 - PCI video cards must be installed in primary PCI bus (slot 1) Issue PCI video cards must be installed in primary PCI bus

And Another that gives rise to placing the card past slot #2:
The TopTools Remote Control Card must be installed in either PCI slot 1 or 2 (first and second from the top) of the HP NetServer LC 2000 in order to function correctly. The PCI bus is segmented such that only these two slots are capable of redirecting keyboard input.

I have tried the card in multiple slots, 1,5,6, and 3 I believe. I know the card works since I was able to use it in another machine (a PC). I guess I will have to try and mess with the IRQ's and see what I can come up with. Thanks.

Derek
