topic LC3 - New RAID HD Not Responding in Netservers

OK, the info I got here last time was on the mark, so I'm hoping you guys can help me again. I'm replacing a non-hot swap SCSI HD in a RAID-5 setting (running NT4). When I install the new one, though, I hit <CTRL-M> and it says the drive is not responding. If I install the old one back in and hit <CTRL-M>, it finds the old one, but still says it has failed. So it's definitely the HD. The jumper settings are correct as far as I can tell. Any ideas?</CTRL-M></CTRL-M>

Almost forgot... there is a difference between the old and new HD. Old was WD 9.1GB and 7200. New one is one I picked up locally... IBM, 9.1GB, and 10,000. I was told the WD wasn't made anymore.

hi
if the hdd is a non hot-swapp, probably the hdd is not responding because the setting of the scsi id is not set at the same adress than the old hdd, in fact in a netraid, the configuration is related to the original scsi id, if you add a hdd with a wrong scsi id it cannot be part of the raid.
in other word check your scsi id
bye
marino

hi
I doesn't read the second part of your message before my reply, it doesn't appear to me (!)
you cannot mix 10k hdd with 7,2k hdd, it can cause you time out problem at scsi level, but anyway, it will be recognised in CTRL-M
bye
marino

Can you post the model #'s of both disks?

You should be able to make that swap based on what you've told us so far.
(The NT "branding" is done to the virtual disk presented to the OS by the RAID controller, not to the individual RAID members.)

HTH,
Paul

The old HD is a Western Digital, model WDE9100-008, SCSI 3, 7200 RPM, 80-pin, 512KB cache, 9.1GB. The new is an IBM Ultrastar Ultra 3 SCSI, model DDYS-T09170, 10,000 RPM, 80-pin, 9.1GB. That's most of what's on the label. Anything else in particular?

Regarding the SCSI ID, the 3 drives are recognized as 0,1,&2 in the NetRaid software. I pulled the 0, so I set the new HD jumper to 0. That came up "Invalid configuration". I double checked the jumpers of the original HD's. The 0 had no jumpers, the 1 had the jumper setting for "0", and the 2 had the jumper setting for "1". So I removed the jumper from the new drive. It booted, but forced me to choose settings (F2) or <CTRL-M>. That's when I found "Not Responding".</CTRL-M>

hi
I confirm you that the 10 k rpm vs 7,2 rpm is not supported, you can have a lot of scsi error or hdd in fail using mixed hdd in a raid.
you are right with the jumpers, if you have removed the hdd with the id 0, than you have to reinstall a new hdd in id 0,
when you enter in CTRL-M and there in object>phisical drive, you sould find 2 disk on line and one failed, pressing f2 on the failed disk you should see the caracteristic of the disk, if this doesn't occur, check for:
scsi id, power on the hdd, bended pins on this hdd or on other connectors.
bye
marino

I'll take your word for it that the different speeds won't mix. I can hit F2 to view properties of the old drive, but the new drive won't allow it, because it's not responding. I too thought a cable had went bad, came loose, etc. But when the old drive was put back in and worked (still in fail, though), I knew it had to be the new drive. Guess I'll take it back and get a different one. Thanks.

Trish,
If I am not mistaken, your newly purchased HDD is deffective (DOA - dead on arrival).

If you change back the HDD with your vendor, I am sure you can put back this HDD and use.
But as earlier message it is definitely not recommended to mix.

Bye,
Kong
