topic Dual Processor LM, and a memory question. in Netservers

I have two identical LM/60's. Could I take the processor card out of one of them and put it in the extra slot in the other one to make a dual-processor machine? Or does it not work that way?

Also, can anyone verify exactly what type of SIMMs will work in an LM? I hve a whole box of SIMMs, all are 60 to 70ns. Only two out of the whole box will work in the machine, and unfortunately they are each 4meg sticks. I have a bunch of 32 meg sticks that I would really like to use, as this machine is going to see server use, despite its age.

The only really definiing feature of the two sticks that do work is the fact that they have (I think) 8 chips on one side, and I believe 3 or 4 on the other side? Does that fact make those memory sticks somehow different from the ones that have an equal number of chips on both sides, or the ones that only have chips on one side?

Thanks in advance,
Matt F

Also, with the 32meg SIMMs, I did switch the jumper on the motherboard to the setting for 16-32meg SIMMs.

LM has only one processor board slot (the upper one). The lower is a memory expansion board slot, so you cannot put a second processor card in LM (there was a special dual-processor board).

For the memory, 32 MB SIMMs must be installed in pairs and the speed (60 or 70 ns) must match (but I'm sure you know it :-). Did you set the correct jumper? E391 for bank 0 and E392 for bank 2.

Marcin
http://netserver.hp.com/support/parts_service/memory/memory_tpl.asp?pid=lm

Memory Configuration Guidelines

The server supports 4 MB and 8 MB (70 ns or 80 ns) (no 60 ns SIMMs). NEC or Mitsubishi SIMMs can only be 70 ns.
For 16 MB and 32 MB SIMMs, speed must be 60 or 70 ns (no 80 ns SIMMs).
You must install memory modules in pairs (called banks) of matching size and speed; however, the banks can be of different sizes and speeds.
If you install a pair of 16 MB or 32 MB memory modules, you must move the jumper for the corresponding bank to the 2-3 position (Jumpers E0390, E0391, E0392).

256MB Memory Expansion Board
Product Number Exchange Replacement
D2954A D2954-60001

256 MB Memory Expansion Board Kit Guidelines:
The 256 MB memory expansion board supports 4 MB and 8 MB (70 ns or 80 ns) SIMMs, and 16 MB and 32 MB (70 ns) SIMMs.
You can install SIMMs in any bank (two slots in a row) on the board, starting with bank 4.
If you install a pair of 16 MB or 32 MB SIMMs, you must move the jumper for the corresponding bank to the 2-3 position.
Memory Expansion Board Banks and Jumpers

Video Memory - DRAM
The video has 512 KB of RAM that allows pixel resolutions of 640 x 480 in 16 colors. You can upgrade the server from 512 KB to 1 MB by installing four, 256 KB x 4 bit, 60 ns DRAMs in the four empty DRAM sockets.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Only DRAMs from certain manufacturers have been tested for compatibility with the HP Netserver LM Series. Hewlett-Packard does not supply the DRAM upgrade.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recommended Video DRAM Vendors:

Vendor
DRAM Part Number

Fujitsu MB81C4256AP-60
Hitachi HM51425HP-6
NEC uP0424256C-60
Samsung KM44C256BP-6
Intel P21014-06
Toshiba TC514256Ap-60
Texas Instruments TMS44C256N-60

hope can help
bye
marino
