Can't you get the model number from the serial number label on the netserver case? That should have the product name and number as well as the serial number of the server.

Alicia

No. I manage these servers remotely. Is there any way to get the server model from Linux? For example for ProLiant servers I can grep the model from the output of dmidecode (RHEL only) or from the Compaq/HP Survey utility plain text files:

/usr/sbin/dmidecode | /bin/grep -i proliant

/bin/grep 'System Name:' /var/compaq/survey/survey*.txt

The NetServers I have are running Red Hat Linux 7.3 and I can't use dmidecode. I can't install the Compaq/HP Survey utility as it only installs on ProLiant platform. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ross

The short answer is you can't. I asked the Response Center several times for this and they had no way to pull that information. Once we had proliants and Survey I never looked back.

Dave

Here is what my solution was -- lshw. It can get both model and serial numbers from most of the NetServers.
Thanks,
Ross
