Hi,

I am trying to install 2008 Standard Server core on a g3 DL380 using Smart Start 8.25 (this is the latest that I can use with this particular G3 due to it being a i686). I have burned an ISO of the OS to DVD, and verified it opens correctly and is a bootable DVD. In the smart start setup, it asks me to:
"Please specify the operating system CD image"
and then opens a browse box to the DVD and it's directories. What file am I supposed to select here? so far everything I have selected including bootmgr has not worked.

Thanks.

not sure I've seen that request from SmartStart before. Using the word "image" it sounds like it's asking for an ISO file.

Have you tried just booting the OS media and doing the installation without SmartStart.

I am trying to install server core in case that makes a difference.

It is a 32 bit server. It cannot run 2008 R2. I have tried many of the recommendations in that thread including:
replacing DVD drive
Redownloading Smart Start
Redownloading 2008 ISO
Using /mount/dvd when it asks for an image

Nothing works.

I also noticed that when I try to just install 2008 Server not using smart start, that errors out as well:

The input datafile (hpssbem.ini) could not be found.

Does it have to be 2008?
Might be hard to get that working on this model without the right drivers etc..
Maybe 2008 would work if you run it in a vmware VM?

How do you have the boot order set in RBSU? make sure the CD/DVD ROM is before hard disk

Maybe something is wrong with your bootable 2008 media. The "hpssbem" error is from a failed SmartStart installation trying to boot from the hard disk.

The DL380 G3 shipped with a CD ROM drive, has it been swapped out for a DVD ROM drive?

Can you load a 32-bit ver. of the O/S on that server? I had a G3 Proliant that would NOT run a 64-bit O/S. I purchased a DL380 G4 that WOULD run 64-bit O/S but quickly found out I'd need a G5 if I wanted to play with Hyper-V

Also, Might want to make sure the program used to burn that ISO verify's the CD. Nothing worse than a burned CD with corrupt files!

Keep us posted.
I have installed 2008 on other g3s without an issue. This is a 32bit server. I am only attempting to install 32 bit OS. I tried upgrading the firmware, no go.

One difference between this G3 and the others is that this one's processor arch is i686 and not x86. I wonder if that is why it will not work?

I used the erase utility on the smart start dvd to clean the hard drives. I am now trying a straight windows install once more. It is past the hp error though. I had tried this originally and it failed with a different error, so I will see if it happens again. I expect it to.
