Hello,

I'm trying to install NW5.0 on my new DL380G3 server, but the SmartStart-CD only supports NW5.1 and NW6.0.

According to the OS-support matrix, NW5.0 is supported for this server.

The installation stops at the hardware detection point, where no storage adapter driver is listed to install.

I've tried to make use of NSSD 3.40A, no success. I also tried the driver for the Smart Array 5300 (ADPT160M.HAM).

NW5.0 doesn't recognize these drivers and messages: "No Storage driver files (*.HAM, *.CDM) or their description files (*.DDI) were found at this path.

What to do? Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks in advance,
Pascal Gulikers

Hello;

Please refer to the OS Support Matrix at ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/os-support-matrix-310.pdf.

NetWare 5.0 is not a supported OS on this machine; Netware 5.1 is.

That being said, you can get the OS on the system. I have written steps to workaround this problem.

Here are the steps:

Symptoms

Public symbol errors when loading adpt160m.ham and cpqraid.ham.

Cause

The version of NWPA contained on the Netware 5.0 install cd is too old to support the newer storage drivers. There is no way to force a newer version of NWPA into the install process.

Resolution/Workaround

Use SmartStart 5.20 and assisted installation path for Netware 5.0 (not sure if this will work on a G3 - works fine on a G2)

OR

Use an older version of the drivers.

SP16316 - NSSD 6.30a contains cpqraid.ham version 1.08 and adpt160m.ham version 15.05 that will work in the install.

Steps to Workaround:

1) Download and extract SP16316 from http://www.compaq.com/support/files/server/us/download/9670.html

2) Copy required driver (.ham), device manager (.cdm) and .ddi files to floppy. (for example, if using embedded 5i controller, copy cpqraid.ham, cpqraid.ddi, cpqshd.cdm and cpqshd.ddi)

3) During the install at the storage driver summary screen, select Modify, select Storage Adapters, press insert to bring up driver selection list, and press insert again to specify a path to the driver; press F3 and enter A:\ if not already there; press enter; install will scan floppy and find driver (cpqraid.ham or adpt160m.ham) to add to list; select Return to Driver Summary and Continue

4) Storage Devices screen will be displayed next; select Modify and press enter on storage devices; delete scshihd.cdm from list; press insert for list of device managers and insert again to select path; select F3 for path to floppy and enter A:\ if not already there; press enter; install will scan floppy and find device manager (cpqshd.cdm) to add to list; select Return to Driver Summary and Continue

5) Continue with installation of OS as usual

6) Update drivers with cpqdploy.nlm from latest SmartStart cd after applying support packs from Novell

(By the way, the driver for the Smart ARray 5300 controller is CPQRAID.HAM, not ADPT160M.HAM.)

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Janine
Janine,

Thanks for your response. By following your clear instructions, I managed to successfully load the storage adapter driver.

Unfortunately, now I'm stuck again at the network adapter installation part.

So now I'm looking for the Netware 5.0 driver for the embedded Compaq NC7781.

Do you (or somebody else) have another magic tip for me here?

Is het possible to download SmartStart 5.20 anywhere?

TIA,
Pascal Gulikers

Hello Pascal;

You're almost there! :-)

The driver for the NC7x series NICs is Q57.lan. It is contained in CP002342.NLM from http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/15129.html

If you need to join a tree as part of your installation, use winzip to extract the .nlm and copy the driver and .ddi file to floppy to install during install (the same way you did with the drivers above).

If you already have the OS installed, pull down the full support pack to the server and run cpqdploy.nlm to update and install all drivers, including Q57.lan.

Cheers!

Janine

Hello Janine
thanks for your response

Unfortunately my ML370G3 cannot be upgraded with the embedded 5i controller (only G2 could).

Does your workaround also function with another RAID controller?

According to quickspecs, the Proliant ML370G3 supports one of the following controllers:

Smart Array 532 Controller 225338-B21
Smart Array 5302/128 Controller 283552-B21
Smart Array 5304/256 Controller 283551-B21
Smart Array 5312 Controller 238633-B21
Smart Array 641 Controller 291966-B21
Smart Array 642 Controller 291967-B21

Which one(s) should I use?

Greeting

Tobias Jochmann
Hi Tobias;

Because NetWare 5.0 is not supported on your server, you'd have to do some experimenting, but my guess is all but the 5x controllers will work with an older version of cpqraid.ham in that work-around.

Janine
