I have a new DL320 G6 server that came with a single CPU and two 4Gb RAM modules. The RAM is installed in slots 3 and 6. I want to upgrade to at least another 8Gb or 16Gb of RAM but I'm not sure how to populate the slots. I thought each CPU would only see memory in its channel, which would mean the single CPU installed would only see slots 1-3. The server (Windows 2008 R2) does register the full 8Gb. So I'm confused as to what slots are available and how I should go about increasing the RAM. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

Thanks for the reply. I did review those documents before posting. My confusion relates to how many slots are available in a one CPU system. The specs state "There are three (3) channels per processor, per server". Does this mean I can only use slots 1, 4, and 7, or can I make use of all 9 slots with the single CPU? Sorry if my question is basic. I've ordered way too many incorrect memory modules in the past and want to make sure I get this correct.

Thanks,

Joe

> The specs state "There are three (3) channels per processor, per server".

The very next sentence in the Quickspecs describes the channels: "There are three (3) DIMM slots for each memory channel; nine (9) total slots."

1 processor * 3 channels per processor * 3 slots per channel = 9 usable slots. This matches the total number of slots, so all the slots must be usable.

Since a DL320 G6 has only one CPU socket, it would not make sense to have DIMM slots that are unusable with only one CPU.
