I have a strange problem regarding my windows 2000 server. I have installed the gateway and client services for netware. The user account I am using when I login has a netware account with the same password.On a cold boot it will not login to a netware server -always timing out while loading the windows desktop and asking for a password to map drives to the novell server. If I click cancel on the connection errors, the windows desktop will start. Here is the strange part: In order for the connection to the novell server to work I have to logout, then log back in. It seems to me like something within the network services is not loading at the right time but I don't know how to go about fixing it.

I think timing has everything to do with it. Have you tried loading the Netware Client 4.83 ( http://download.novell.com/filedist/pages/PublicSearch.jsp ). When you have the client installed, it connects "first" to your netware server before you connect to the domain or local system. You will map drives and run scripts that apply to Novell before any domain connections are made.

thanks for the tip john, but per 3rd party software vendors request - I cannot install the Novell client onto this box.

Hmmm... odd. Ok, then lets do the stuff to reduce the time required on the network...
First, set up a lmhosts file:
with the following (example):
10.200.1.101 NAMEOFPDC #PRE #DOM:DOMAINNAME
10.200.1.101 "DOMAINNAME \0x1B"

and then set up a host file that points to the systems you connect to (i.e., PDC, Novell box, etc.)

Make sure you are running the same IPX frame type 802.2 or 802.3 if you are still running IPX.
